The Parts of a Bathroom: A Homeowner's Remodeling Guide
Before you sign off on a bathroom remodel, it helps to know what's actually behind the walls and floor. Here's a plain-English breakdown of every major part of a bathroom, what it does, and where the money goes.
1. Plumbing rough-in
The rough-in is the water supply and drain lines hidden inside the walls and floor. It sets the location of every fixture — sink, toilet, tub, shower — and dictates whether you can move things around later. Moving a rough-in is one of the biggest cost drivers in any remodel.
- Supply lines — hot and cold water (usually PEX or copper).
- Drain, waste, and vent (DWV) — carries waste out and lets sewer gas escape safely.
- Shut-off valves — one per fixture, so a repair doesn't shut off the whole house.
2. Fixtures
Fixtures are the water-using pieces you actually see and touch. Finish level here has the biggest visual impact on the finished bath.
- Toilet — standard height (~15") vs. comfort height (~17"); one-piece looks cleaner and is easier to clean.
- Sink & faucet — undermount, drop-in, or vessel; single-hole vs. widespread faucet.
- Tub — alcove, drop-in, or freestanding. Freestanding tubs need floor-mounted plumbing.
- Shower — prefab surround (cheapest, fastest) or fully tiled (custom, waterproofed on-site).
- Shower valve & trim — pressure-balance vs. thermostatic; hand-held wand adds flexibility.
3. Waterproofing (the part that saves your house)
A tile shower is only as good as what's under the tile. Skipping waterproofing is the #1 reason bathroom remodels fail within 5 years.
- Shower pan — pre-formed foam or hand-built mortar pan, sloped to the drain.
- Waterproof membrane — sheet membrane (Kerdi, Wedi) or liquid-applied (RedGard) over cement backer board.
- Sealed corners and penetrations — every valve, drain, and corner gets sealed before tile goes down.
4. Cabinetry and vanity
The vanity holds the sink, hides the plumbing, and delivers most of your bathroom storage. Options range from stock big-box vanities to fully custom cabinetry.
- Stock vanities — pre-built, standard sizes (24", 30", 36", 48", 60").
- Semi-custom — stock boxes, custom door styles and finishes.
- Custom — built to fit an odd wall, tall ceilings, or a specific storage need.
- Countertops — quartz (durable, low-maintenance), granite, or marble (needs sealing).
- Medicine cabinets & linen towers — recessed vs. surface-mount; matters for narrow rooms.
5. Lighting zones
Good bathroom lighting is layered — one fixture rarely does it all. Building code also requires damp-rated or wet-rated fixtures in specific zones near water.
- Ambient — ceiling light or recessed cans for overall brightness.
- Task — vanity lighting (sconces or a bar) at eye level so faces aren't shadowed.
- Accent — toe-kick lights, mirror backlighting, or a shower niche light.
- Exhaust fan — required by code; sized by room square footage. A humidity-sensing fan is worth the small upcharge.
6. Tile and finishes
Tile is where personality shows up. It also drives labor cost — small tile, mosaic accents, and pattern layouts take significantly longer than a large-format straight lay.
- Floor tile — porcelain is the most durable; wood-look plank tile is popular in Texas builds.
- Shower walls — large-format porcelain reduces grout lines and maintenance.
- Niche & bench — built-in shampoo shelf and a seat, waterproofed like the rest of the shower.
- Grout & sealant — epoxy grout for showers is stain- and mold-resistant.
7. Trim, hardware, and the finishing pieces
- Mirror — framed, frameless, or integrated LED.
- Cabinet hardware — small budget line, big style impact.
- Towel bars, hooks, TP holder — coordinate finish with faucets.
- Trim & baseboards — moisture-resistant MDF or PVC in wet zones.
- Paint — bathroom-rated (mold- and mildew-resistant) satin or semi-gloss.
Rough order of costs
In a Central Texas mid-range bathroom remodel ($18,000–$45,000), spending usually shakes out roughly like this:
- Labor: 40–55%
- Tile & waterproofing: 10–20%
- Cabinetry & counters: 10–15%
- Fixtures (toilet, tub, shower, faucets): 10–15%
- Lighting, exhaust, electrical: 5–10%
- Paint, trim, hardware, mirror: 3–5%
